It was an all-out joy for Kogi Polytechnic lecturers and other civil servants in Lokoja as they were handed their salary arrears at various table payment centers across the state capital.
Our reporter who visited some of the centers reported that the workers who received cheques to be cashed in their various banks thanked God that in every “cloud there is a silver lining” which they claimed has come for them after months of difficulties.
The workers described the process as peaceful, orderly and without intimidating security presence.
Alhaji Zakari Usman and Amina Agada in their separate remarks, adjudged the table payment process as well organized, adding that it was stress free and easy for them to move from the various verification and capturing points to the payment table.
According to Comrade Rachael Olorunfemi the labour leader in charge of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs payment point, the state chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) had its union members in all the centres to observe and ensure that the interest of civil servants were protected.
Speaking further, Comrade Olorunfemi added that the process was as smooth as envisaged, as civil servants were well behaved, complying with the process and were being attended to as proposed by the state government.
Cashiers at the various centres who spoke with our reporter noted that the process would assist the government to arrive at the authentic figure of its actual workforce and would drastically curtail fraud in the system.
As at the time InsideStory crew visited the pay point at the official premises of the SSG, the place was a little rowdy as every civil servant wanted to make their way into the hall almost at the same time, but it was later brought under control as they were asked to conduct themselves in a single file.
